MacLEOD, Euphemia Jane (1866-1954)
Biography
Born on August 15th 1866 in Quebec City, Euphemia Jane MacLeod was the daughter of Donald Ross MacLeod, lumber merchant, and of Jane Brown.
MacLeod was one of the first two women to receive of Bachelor of Arts degree at Morrin College, Quebec City, in 1889. In 1894, she completed a Masters’ Degree in Philosophy at McGill University, the first women to receive such a degree at McGill.
She taught at Morrin College in 1901 and 1902, the last two years of the institution.
She was involved in movements against cruelty to animals. Her first volume of poetry was dedicated to the president of the British National Anti-Vivisection Society. She moved to Spokane, Washington around 1920, where her brother had been living for several years. She was involved on the board of the Washington Humane Education and Anti-Vivisection Society and wrote articles against cruelty to animals in the local press.
She published My Rose and Other Poems (1919) and Seances with Carlyle (1919).
She died in Spokane on December 23rd 1954.
