My Morrin: Poetry Workshop
Poetry Workshop: Quebec City as Muse
I have a poetic story to tell! But where to begin? Perhaps near the beginning or somewhere near the middle. Or why not towards the end, which really points to a new beginning somewhere else?
In this 90-minute activity from the My Morrin series, you are invited to explore the many stories that emerge from our encounter with the muse that is Quebec City. Come examine the ways in which the line between city and poem blurs or even disappears. Here on the edges between life and poem is where our story begins.
Participants will start by taking a look at some poetic concepts (or what’s an image for?), but only for a moment. The workshop will quickly give everyone a chance to use a hands-on approach for experimenting with a variety of poetic forms to capture our muse, if only for a moment, which may be what we are always hoping for anyway. That’s because time for the next inspiration is always drawing near. Let’s see how we can get closer to the secret life of poetry and closer to our poetic selves!
About the host
Ken Hay is a former Saskatchewanian. He has lived in Quebec City for over 20 years now. He first earned his keep teaching English as a second language and getting a gig as a Master’s student to teach the English Canadian novel at Université Laval, all before focusing solely on translation as a freelancer. Now in semi-retirement, he devotes time and thought to poetry, particularly American poetry from Dickinson and Whitman to the present, and trying to keep an eye on Canadian poetry too. Ken has had poems published by peer-reviewed journals, including Better than Starbucks and Triadae. His chief aim now is to work with others to cultivate a home-grown group of poets looking to offer their unique poetic views about life here in Quebec City and, of course, elsewhere in the universe.
My Morrin allows members to lead events sponsored by the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec (Morrin Centre). Members are thus encouraged to submit ideas for arts, heritage and education activities. Consult the My Morrin page for more information and to submit your projects.
