In These Spaces – Book Conservation
Are you curious about science, architecture, artifacts, history or music? Throughout the In These Spaces project, participants will explore a diverse set of subjects using the Morrin Centre’s spaces as a backdrop. Over the course of five live-streamed events, experts will talk about their field of expertise with our host Peter Black.
Book Conservation
What is the difference between preservation and conservation? If mold or signs of an insect infestation are found in a book, what can be done to prevent it from spreading through a collection? What materials are typically found when examining an old book?
During this conference broadcasted from our library, Marie Trottier, a book and archival document conservator, will discuss the answers to these questions and much more. You will learn more about her profession, hear some of her techniques for caring for old books, and receive ideas on how to preserve your own book collection.
Guest – Marie Trottier
Marie Trottier is a paper conservator, specializing in rare books and archival documents, with 35 years of experience in the field. Trained in Canada, the United States, and Europe, she worked at the Canadian Centre for Architecture for over 20 years before joining the Centre de Conservation du Québec in 2009. In addition to having taught at McGill University for 4 years as well as at Université de Montréal, she has collaborated in a project digitizing and restoring the registers at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
Marie Trottier specializes in the conservation, preservation, and diagnostic examination of bound objects, and she has extensive experience in treating bound works of various kinds dating from the 15th to the 21st centuries.
Since her retirement from the Centre de Conservation in 2021, she has been working as an independent conservator.
